Introduction

In reflecting upon recent festivities, I found myself drawn to contrasting experiences surrounding birthday celebrations. While my own passed with minimal fanfare, my attention was captivated by the vibrant affair surrounding my sister's birthday. Eager to mark the occasion in a memorable manner, we embarked on a trip to K&D Lanes, the local bowling alley situated in Bolivar, MO. The excursion provided an interesting juxtaposition of styles, with my attire echoing the flamboyance of a raver amidst a backdrop of cowboy and cowgirl-inspired outfits donned by my companions. As we entered the establishment, the antiquated charm of the building greeted us, along with the warm reception of two seasoned attendants manning the front desk. Among the array of offerings, the allure of glow bowling at 7:00 PM added an extra layer of excitement to our outing. Throughout the course of our visit, we engaged in two exhilarating rounds of bowling, each moment contributing to the narrative of a memorable birthday celebration.

My decision to attend my sister's birthday bowling event was primarily motivated by a desire to analyze the music selection for the purpose of crafting a blog post. Through this endeavor, I aim to shed light on the types of music commonly played in such settings and advocate for the broader acceptance of EDM in our local community.

The Music that was Played

The music selection predominantly featured two EDM tracks, one of which incorporated elements of religious R&B with a breakbeat rhythm. Although titled "Heaven," this track leaned towards a Christian theme, a genre not typically associated with mainstream nightlife entertainment unless one holds strong religious beliefs. Conversely, the other EDM track played was a universally recognized anthem, namely "SORRY 4 Party Rocking" by LMFAO. However, the remainder of the playlist primarily comprised obscure old country tunes and unfamiliar tracks, diverging significantly from the EDM-centric atmosphere typically expected in nightlife venues. In essence, the establishment resembled a family-friendly nightclub but lacked the pulsating beats and energy synonymous with EDM music.

Stop Repeating, "What Music do You Listen To."

Considering much of the music played, I am pretty sure they played from a playlist that the staff of the alley curated themselves and never bothered to asked anyone at the alley what they listened to. But there are other ways to observe what someone listens to.

Considering the age demographics of the attendees, it's evident that individual music tastes play a significant role in shaping the atmosphere of the venue. Many of the patrons frequenting the establishment appeared to be teenagers and college aged kids, possibly on dates or attending family gatherings. This demographic diversity undoubtedly influences the preferred genre of music, with each group seeking to enjoy tunes that resonate with their personal preferences.

It's important to note that our visit coincided with a Sunday, a time when the venue typically experiences lower foot traffic. Consequently, the absence of a sizable crowd meant that there were fewer individuals present to influence the music selection or contribute to the overall ambiance of the space. This scenario highlights the nuanced relationship between age demographics, social dynamics, and musical preferences within the context of leisure and entertainment venues.

One can often discern someone's musical preferences based on their choice of attire. For instance, individuals clad in vibrant and shiny garments, techwear, or adorned with graphic tees, like my own attire, likely have an affinity for EDM music. Conversely, those who favor spikes, patches, and attire predominantly in black may lean towards punk rock or heavy metal genres. Similarly, individuals donning cowboy attire are often associated with a penchant for country music. However, it's important to recognize that clothing choices are not absolute indicators of musical taste. Assuming that someone dressed as a cowboy enjoys EDM music, for instance, would be a misguided presumption.

Furthermore, it could be advantageous for event organizers or hosts to consider incorporating music selections that align with the prevailing fashion aesthetics of their audience. This approach acknowledges the correlation between fashion and musical preferences, suggesting that individuals are more likely to enjoy a genre of music that complements their style choices. By catering to these associations, hosts can enhance the overall experience for attendees and create a more cohesive atmosphere that resonates with their tastes.

While rock, pop, and country music have a strong presence in the Ozarks, EDM offers something fresh and exciting. Its positive vibes and pulsating beats are a perfect fit for our vibrant community. Imagine kicking back at a local bowling alley after a day of exploring, only to be surprised by a killer EDM set that gets your feet moving.
