Introduction

When contemplating desert raves, Burning Man invariably comes to mind. My interest in attending Burning Man dates back to my introduction to EDM music. Ideally, I would be among the attendees, but for individuals such as myself, raised in financially modest circumstances, the exorbitant ticket prices of Burning Man can quickly deplete one's earnings. The dominance of the top 5% in dictating the nature of EDM festivals like this is a concern. While their influence may inflate the perceived cost of participation, it should not dissuade us from cultivating our own distinctive experiences, even if they may not match the grandeur of Burning Man. This leads to the exploration of alternative events such as the Ozark Blaze Festival, nestled in the sylvan backdrop of the Ozarks, offering a unique festival experience, particularly poignant for me as a native to this area.

What is Burning Man?

Two individuals initiated Burning Man as a modest gathering on a San Francisco beach, where a wooden effigy of a man was ceremoniously set ablaze to mark the advent of the summer solstice. With the passage of time, attendance swelled, prompting a relocation to the expansive terrain of the Black Rock Desert in Nevada. What began as a small-scale affair has evolved into a week-long convergence attracting participants from across the globe, exemplifying the seemingly simple genesis of any festival.

Guided by principles such as radical inclusion, self-reliance, and self-expression, Burning Man epitomizes a transient community founded upon artistic ingenuity, collective endeavor, and active engagement. What having a Festival Like Burning Man Means for the Missouri Ozarks?

Burning Man predominantly showcases EDM music, aligning with its identity as a desert rave. As previously mentioned, the festival is renowned for its distinctive amalgamation of art, music, and counter cultural ethos. In a recent blog post titled Tomorrowland in Ozarkland, I explore the potential intersection between the rich cultural landscape of the Ozarks and the EDM scene. The historical legacy of the Ozarks, steeped in the traditions of Native Americans, adds a compelling dimension to this cultural tapestry. As a native of this area, I have been to many lakes, rivers, and parks but the beauty of a few of the parks struck me off the hook in terms of beauty and are great examples of best places here in deep Southwest Missouri to have an EDM festival or two similar to those of EDC and Burning Man. This park/bike trail I found to amaze me at how much room there can be down in the Valleys was the David C. Murray Park Trailhead. Here are some photos and videos:

This video showcases a portion of the trail we traversed, covering a total distance of 3 miles. Evaluating its suitability for hosting an EDM festival, it presents both favorable and unfavorable aspects. On the downside, the site's history as a former landfill has left behind debris and discarded tires, contributing to a wasteland atmosphere. Additionally, its proximity to a water treatment facility introduces an unpleasant odor, compounded by its status as protected property. However, on a positive note, the expanse of land within the valley offers ample space for potential cleanup efforts and the organization of a smaller-scale EDM event akin to Burning Man. It is conceivable that similar locations exist in the vicinity, either under different ownership or available for purchase or rental. This underscores the importance of securing sponsorship, organizing fundraisers, soliciting donations from the public, and engaging in discussions with the city park board. Furthermore, the presence of a river flowing through the area presents an additional advantage, ideal for hosting activities such as yoga and mindfulness sessions commonly featured in many festivals. The tranquil sounds of water serve as a soothing backdrop, offering a respite from the bustling energy of the festival. For those seeking a reprieve from the festival's hustle and bustle, the opportunity to partake in a mindfulness journey by the water presents itself. It serves as a serene escape, allowing individuals to reconnect with themselves amidst the chaos of the event.

As it was a warm winter's day when I took these, there was no leaves on the trees at the time so it looks dull, but at least it was an unseasonably warm day and it will look better in the summer.

Regarding the potential of the Ozarks as another EDM hotspot, I've captured another video to offer a glimpse of the ambiance attendees could experience while engaging in yoga, meditation, or chakra balancing by the river. Please note that the audio quality may not be exceptional.

Along the trail, there stood an art installation featuring a bell crafted from a repurposed fire extinguisher and scrap metal. It seems the intention behind the surrounding scrap metal was to enhance the bell's resonance, potentially making it more pleasing to the ear. Such creations hold potential not only for meditation and healing practices but also as captivating art installations at festivals. Ringing pieces of metal emit high-frequency vibrations that resonate through space, creating a distinct energetic field. This phenomenon taps into the ancient understanding of sound's trans-formative power in spiritual and healing practices.
